after appearances on idle hands and brstl, rhythmic theory returns to their own imprint to further explore gritty textures and mysterious moods within house and techno frameworks. where theory001 featured the somewhat soothing, melancholic tones of >echo vibe< and >omega syndrome<, this second installment comes caked in sonic muck and abrasive attitude.its not all dark and foreboding, as the graceful filter-swept key refrain of >siren song< will attest, but it takes a barrage of rasping hats and bludgeoning kicks and toms before such niceties can be foisted upon our ears. while there is an optimistic lilt to the particular notes the melody calls out, in the midst of such machismo percussion it cant help but feel emotionally ambiguous, continuing the tone set out in the first rhythmic theory releases.there is no such confusion over b side cut >genesis< from the apocalyptic boom of the opening kick to the rapid gun fire of the snare this is a track that wants to inflict damage. at the midway point the searing beat melts away as a wash of delay-riddled speech knocks you from your centre of gravity, only for the drums to come whipping back in to pick up the slack. even the sole synth note that rears its head is devoid of compassion, pulsing a creepy, robotic intonation through the clamour.

the latest installment in deadbeat s infinity dubs series sees him submerging his rhythms deep into the echo chamber, offering up 2 solid state dubs with basslines so low only the largest systems will even register their presence. enlightenment through stoic repetition is the order of the day here, and deadbeat once again proves his unrivaled skills as a master hypnotist on both cuts. dont sleep.

nicolas cantu makes a welcome return to sequencias with the lost tribe—a brisk 808 workout with lush synthwork and psychedelic acid stylings. this is a more breezy approach compared to his work on other labels yet spares none of the imaginative or emotive qualities. on the flip side, label head jm de frias offers up the dissonant groover the light as a follow up to his debut track from levon vincents acclaimed fabric mix cd. brash percussion collides with staccato melodies awash in echo and organ, sustaining an intensity that never quite boils over. the two team up for the closer the last light, an atmospheric epic of growling strings, breathy ambience and melancholy stitched together with creaky, decrepit acid stabs and brittle percussion. this is the beginning of an on going collaboration between the two, keep your ears open in the near future.

cavaan is the alter ego of a rather well known berlin producer and his fellow from milan. the duo debuts with their very much loved project. they feature a studio-recorded wonderful vocal on this hypnotically modern percussive house affair titled black snow. the original track grooves on some free swinging retro percussions and beats from the 80s machinery and a softly moving house-beat making this a very subtle killer for any dancefloor. while the vocals carry the track as light as a feather it is after the breakdown that things get really musical - you will hear yourself while listening the melodies and sequences. for the remixes turdjr has aligned a high-quality and diverse array of a current top producer. one of heidelbergs coolest kids on the block, lopazz knows that every track gets better with a lot of handmade music-and he sure is right in his interpretation of black snow. last not least i is under on the flip which is one of these tracks that sucks the listener in so deep that there is simply no escape: repetitive yet constantly changing and constantly grooving while remaining very pure! this release is filled with tracks that will long echo on the dancefloor!

as apple pips continues to explore its opening mantra of echo, depth, swing and bass within the duplicitous realms of modern electronica, it welcomes to the fold two long-standing friends of the label and in turn sheds light on their own fresh avenues within house music. you might already know lrusse as id or behling, commonly found kicking up the dust alongside sam baobinga simpson in all manner of styles and tempos, while bleecker has an accomplished back-story in dubstep as wedge & through his own if symptoms persist imprint. in their new venture both producers fuse their dancefloor inclinations with more searching, experimental textures and tones, placing crafty sound design on a level pegging with the more immediate tropes of groove and presence.

livity sound is the label and live project combining the talents of the bristol trio of peverelist, kowton & asusu with a mandate to explore the edges of techno through the prism of the bristol echo chamber. the velez / rendering 12 inch is the second, highly anticipated solo release for asusu on the label.

nick lapiens debut release as metropolis garnered little attention when it materialized last year. a skeptical yet dedicated network of underground heads built up a subterranean buzz that has yet to spread into the daylight. that initial transmission was thick with the raw analogue flavors that have become ever-present in dance floor fare recently—but his is a sound that is dedicated to the emotive, narrative aspects of electronic music rather than simple fetishization or passing curiosity in the days of yore. this, his second release as metropolis, shows a more focused and patient hand at work. the titular track on the a side is a deep, psychedelic groover. melodies, textures and sequences undulate and intertwine within a lightless atmosphere guided by lapien with optimum restraint. equally pensive and gorgeous, the flood serves as a machine’s beat-less foil on the reverse. made up of little more than feedback and two slow, echo laden arpeggiated sequences, this is reminiscent of jean michel jarre’s more sinister moments: a brilliant paradox of economy and indulgence. expect to hear more from lapien here at sequencias. he has many more dark corners left unexplored.

emotional rescue certainly laid a claim for the most esoteric of reissue endeavours last year, and they are looking to maintain this approach in 2013. their first release sees the label dig further into the cassette archives of kevin harrison, focusing specifically on the neo project the coventry musician did in cahoots with fellow electronic explorer, peter every from neophyte records. as you can tell from the primitive drum heavy tone of the music, neo surfaced in 1985 with the 8 track cassette release global network. this twelve presents five of those tracks, all of which echo the pulsing electronic rhythms of the fly ep, emotional rescues previous harrison reissue, and will find as much favour with those who sleep on the left side of disco as fans of cold wave.

the second tape in the series, ferro #01 continues the path through the abyss of dubbed out techno sounds: ever forward with off-kilter resonations from the echo chamber and a pounding heart-beat throughout. like #00, this one is again a tape-only-release. each cassette is a unique piece of art – stamped, numbered and equipped with a link to the digital files. but ther is no way to get these files without grabbing a tape!

the cl interpretations, based on the sixth melted recordings release cl versions of echtzeit, were firstly divided into two sucessful releases: part 1 and 2. now that more artists of circle of friends of melted have done their own interpretations, a third part was released. this time all tracks were based on the same track three, but now with a wide-spread spectrum of techno – from melodic, deep and dubtech to harder, diffused and current state of the art techno. monomood, known from the melted recordings friended label etui records, starts with his constructive warm and melodic rebuild called 3cl of echo. also aerror is here into deep dubtechno, much different as his last version of part 1. sector varied his track for part 1 into a more deep dub but kicking techno track terminals rmx. bassart, an austrian techno and electro dj, comes a with highly diffused hard techno interpretation – his first vinyl appearance. it is the first techno track (called cotta re-dub) of bons on vinyl, too. he is in the circle of friends and supporter of melted for many years, since the start in 1999.

if you have heard daniel martin-mccormicks name recently, it would probably have been either in association with his disco/punk/echo band mi ami, or as sex worker on the not not fun label, or finally as ital on nnfs sister label 100% silk, recording quite different sounding house music to this album. raised in washington dc, daniel has a history in the citys hardcore scene, he was in the dischord records signed black eyes, but was also making dance inspired tracks at the same period, but coming from a very different angle from your average guy with a copy of logic and a working knowledge of dance musics history.

andras toth is not a nu-school producer. please refrain from adding up-and-coming to his biography. he has arrived. with his second full solo-ep on alphahouse records, he presents a varied and captivating look into the mind of an accomplished musician. following the success of his previous works on the label, his debut >us< and the collaborative ep >futures< with boss-man butane, >would u?< is a trip through improvisational jazz, open-air sunrises, and sonic after-hours explorations. herein lies real music, nothing formulaic, nothing safe. the ep embodies an ethos, held by alphahouse, that musicianship is about originality, not following trends. there is still much that remains good in the world of independent electronic dance music. we will continue to search for, and find it.
